US–Iran Ceasefire Near Collapse as Strait of Hormuz Tensions Rise
Attempts to stop the fighting between the U.S. and Iran ran into an obstacle this week as a one-month cease-fire agreement reached its breaking point. While diplomacy is still being conducted, both parties engaged in hostilities within the Strait of Hormuz on Friday, where the U.S. military attacked ships linked to Iran, and Iran fired missiles at the United Arab Emirates. According to a recent CIA report that was leaked, Iran can last four more months withstanding the U.S. Navy's blockade, which could reduce Washington's influence during negotiations. With the price of oil climbing past $101 per barrel, the U.S. imposed sanctions on Iran's drones, including Chinese companies, days ahead of the meeting between Trump and Xi.
